Happiness is not by chance, but by choice.

Jim Rohn

It is easier to believe that we’re ducked, as my auto correct tells me, than to live in the light of truth that we are who we are by choice. This is a very difficult pill to swallow. For some it is a medicine that no amount of sugar can help make it go down, but happiness doesn’t happen by chance, nothing that matters is accidental, everything happens as a matter of choice.

That choice is not always ours. With seven billion people in the world acting every which way it would be foolish to think that we can have what we want quite easily. The opposite is true. You have to work and toil and fail for years. You have to exist in seemingly endless obscurity before one day, unexpectedly, you become an overnight sensation. On that one day you discover that you’re happy and grateful for everything, and I mean everything.

Happiness is a choice. Having a purpose in your life is a choice. Making moral and ethical decisions is a choice. Sharing yourself with the world without knowing if you’ll be accepted or rejected is always a matter of choice.

This might not be what you want to hear. You might be waiting for the self help book of all self help books to finally be published. You’re looking for the secret of things or a new, previously undiscovered finding of some kind. You’re looking for a mentor, or a guru, or a teacher to see something in you and by chance, by luck, by the toss of the dice, you want to wake up one morning and be surrounded by joy and happiness.

That too is a choice, but you’re better off knowing that good things will come to you. They will come to you despite not knowing how this will happen or when it will happen. The life you dream of having is around the next corner, but your cannot turn that corner if you don’t make the choice to work, be disciplined, and plan accordingly.

Of course if you’re selfish and only wish to help yourself, God will not be smiling upon your nd the universe will not lift her kind finger to help you. You’ll be on your own, struggling on your own, and in the end you might end up with what you wanted, but you might also discover that it is not what you thought it would be.

Being selfless is the other choice you stand to make. You can choose to speak, write, sing, dance, or prepare meals to share your humanity with others. You might start a business to help someone do something better and more meaningfully. Your selflessness is an integral part of being happy, and this act of generosity doesn’t happen by accident. Yes, you guessed it, you have to create this act of good will, whatever it is, because you choose to do so.

Believe that you are free. That is non negotiable. You are free, no matter what is happening, or what is not happening. How you think about things is in itself a decision, and you’re free to see the world any which way you’d like.

Freedom is at the heart of everything. It is everything. So don’t take any decision you make for granted. Large or small, cherish all of them. Live your life according to your dreams. Choose to be happy. Chose to be selfless.
